The Volturi is a secret society of alpha vampires who do everything they must to keep their true nature and powers unknown to the human world. From time to time, they travel away from Volterra, their home land and central place of power, to other parts of the world to punish and crush vampire clans that fail to live by their rules. The Volturi rise with force and cunning to protect the delicate veils of their true existence, veils woven slowly in myth and blood through the centuries. They are the ruling, if not royal, family of the vampire universe. You may recall that recently, in Forks, Washington, the Volturi plotted to destroy Victoria's evil coven. Her young vampires had spread their menace even into Seattle. Further, as you know from the Twilight series, the Volturi have launched a mission against Bella. They Bella dead or "turned," dead or "vampired." Bella knows much to much about the ways of the Volturi. And Edward opposes this "royal" initiative, knowing the cost will be Bella's precious soul. Moreover, in the last book of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn, the Voluturi descend to destroy Renesmee and those who protect her. The Volturi believe that Renesmee is an "Immortal Child."
